RO: Ce face omul când are traista prea plină de muncă şi oboseală? Îşi mai face de lucru. Aşa am ajuns să croşetez o pălărioară veselă de plajă. Dacă nu eşti genul de persoană care se bălăceşte non stop în piscină, dar îţi place să stai la plajă şi ai o fire veselă şi optimistă, pălăria asta-i pentru tine!

Aşa se face că-n miez de noapte am început modelul acesta de palarie de primavara – vara, potrivit pentru ieşirile la iarbă verde. Pentru acest model am folosit croşeta de 4 mm, fir de bumbac – Alize Cotton gold pentru primele rânduri în degrade şi Schachenmayr Catania pentru rândurile foarte colorate. Primele rânduri de creșteri sunt lucrate în spirală, iar rândurile unde schimb culorile am ales să închid cu slip stitch. În felul acesta arată mai bine schimbarea culorilor pe fiecare rând.

Ca de obicei, voi folosi terminologia americană de croşetat, dar pentru a fi mai uşor de înţeles şi cititorilor români, le-am tradus :

– ochiul de lant = chain – ch;
– piciorusul mic = simple crochet – sc;
– piciorusul mare = double crochet – dc;
– piciorusul dublu redus = half double crochet – hdc;
– piciorusul triplu =triple crochet – tr;
– piciorusul orb = slip stitch – sl st ori ss.

EN: Although I was exhausted and too busy working on custom orders, I had to make a custom spring hat. It is perfect for sunny days when you just want to lay back and enjoy the sun. Just don’t fall asleep under the hot summer sun, like I did

In the middle of the night I started working on this pattern. I used a 4 mm crochet hook, cotton yarn and American crochet terminology. The yarn I used is Alize Cotton Gold and Catania. The increasing rows with HDC in 3rd loop are worked in the round, no joining, but after that you will need to join rows with a slip stitch. It will look pretty this way when changing colors.

Cum se croseteaza o palarie de vară? / Crochet spring hat pattern

R1: Magic Circle – 10 HDC – nu unim rândurile, lucrăm spirală HDC, dar în a 3-a buclă / do not join, continue working HDC in 3rd loop.

R2: 2HDC in each HDC, join – 20 HDC in total

R3: *1 HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in the next * repeat  -30 HDC

R4: *1 HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in the next * repeat – 40 HDC

R5: 1 HDC in each stitch – 40 HDC

How the HDC in 3rd loop looks like on the wrong side

R6: *1 HDC in next 4, 2 HDC in the next * repeat – 50 HDC

R7: 1 HDC in each stitch – 50 HDC

R8: * 1 HDC in next 5, 2 HDC in the next *  repeat – 60 HDC

R9: 1 HDC in each stitch – 60 HDC – you can stop increasing here for a smaller hat, I went one more row of increasing

R10: *1 HDC in next 6, 2 HDC in the next * repeat – 70 HDC

For R11 I changed yarn to Catania, light blue and went on with a row of sc – ch 1, skip 1 – and at the end of the row I joined with a slip stitch. It is easier to change colors this way and it looks nice and tidy. In total for R11 I have 35 sc and 35 ch1 spaces.

R12: continue with blue yarn and increase some more, make  sc – ch 1, sk 1 in the next 4 and in the 5th work a sc-ch1- sc-ch1-sc in the same place.

R13: change to white yarn, work a sc in each – 94 sc in total.

R14: change to light green yarn – make sc-ch1 sk 1 in each sc from previous row.

R15: change to orange yarn – make 2 HDC ch 1 in each ch1 space from the previous row – 61 formations of 2HDC

R16:  change to white yarn – make 1 DC ch 1 in each Ch1 space from the previous row – 61 DCs in ch 1 spaces.

R17: change to pink yarn – make 1 HDC in each Ch1 space from the previous row – 61

R18: continue with pink yarn – make sc-ch1 sk 1 in each ch1 space from previous row – 61 sc-ch1 formations

R19 – R23: change to red, then orange, then yellow, then light green then light blue yarn – make sc-ch1-sk1 – 61 formations / row

R24: change yarn to purple and make sc- ch 1 – sk 1 and in the next sc increase making sc – ch 1 – sc – ch 1 in the same sc. In the end you will have 90 sc-ch 1 formations

R25: change to pink yarn and make a simple row of sc-ch1-sk1 – 90 formations

R26: change to mauve yarn and make sc-ch 1 for the next 12 sc and in the 13th increase with sc-ch1-sc-ch1 till the end of the row – you will have 96 formations

for the last 6 rows you will only make sc-ch 1 in total 96 formations / row.

You can easily adjust the pattern for your own size/smaller size by starting with a smaller base – for example, just 8 HDC in the magic ring. Or you can ignore the R15, R16 and R17 and work your hat with just the sc-ch 1 sk 1 stitch.

RO: După o “muncă istovitoare” de 3 ore, am reușit să termin prima versiune de jucărie croșetată a unui personaj dintr-un joc, Isaac. Cred că e singura jucărie pe care am terminat-o într-un timp atât de scurt. Croșetarea componentelor nu presupune mult timp, însă finisarea, coaserea și decorarea acestora presupun o atenție mai sporită și mai mult timp de lucru. Da, frumusețea unei jucării e-n detalii și finisaje.

Isaac e lucrat din bumbac Performance, o nuanță de roz deschis. Croșeta de 3 mm, ochi de plastic negri, o bucățică de piele falsă pentru gură (poți înlocui cu fetru) și umplutură din melană dărăcită (da, nu produce alergii).

Dacă dorești să-l croșetezi, am pregătit un tutorial cu multe imagini, în rândurile de mai jos. Pentru că voi folosi terminologia americană, iată și traducerile tehnicilor din română în engleză:

– ochiul de lant = chain – ch;
– piciorusul mic = simple crochet – sc;
– piciorusul mare = double crochet – dc;
– piciorusul dublu redus = half double crochet – hdc;
– piciorusul triplu =triple crochet – tr;
– piciorusul orb = slip stitch – sl st ori ss.
– sc2tog – single crochet 2 together. Înseamnă descreștere / is decreasing.

Spor la croșetat!

EN: Isaac, a character in a game (a gamer knows!) is my first amigurumi crocheted in just 3 hours. The beauty of a really good amigurumi is in the details, in how you sew the components and how you make the facial expression.

Isaac is made of Performance cotton, a pale pink color, worked with a crochet hook of 3 mm. I used plastic two hole buttons for the eyes, some fake leather for the mouth and some non allergenic stuffing. Just like most amigurumi, Isaac is worked in the round, no joining at the end of the row.

Here is the pattern, if you want to make an Isaac for yourself.

Free pattern amigurumi Isaac

Start with legs (make 2):

R1: start with 5 sc in a magic ring.

R2: 2 sc in each sc – 10 sc in total

R3: *1 sc in next 2, 2 sc in the next*, repeat – 15 sc in total

R4: 15 sc around

R5: 15 sc worked in the back loops

R6 – R9: 15 sc (for first leg, break yarn, weave in ends, for second leg join with the first leg)

Joining legs and Body:

R1 of Body: Join the second leg with the first with a sc and place a marker where you just joined. Keep that marker until you finish this amigurumi. You can use a thread of yarn or a plastic marker.

After joining work sc in the round till you reach the marker. You should have 32 sc in total, 15 sc per leg and 2 places where you joined the legs with sc.

R2: 1 sc in the next 7, 2 sc in the next 2, 1 sc in the next 14, 2 sc in the next 2, 1 sc in the last 7 – 36 sc in total.

R3: 36 sc in the round

Leave a long thread of yarn for sewing the head onto the body.

But before sewing the components, lets make the eyes and the mouth. Use 2 plastic or wooden two hole black buttons and add them between 12th and 13th rows.

For the mouth cut a piece of black fabric, sew a straight line with white yarn and pin it. Then sew the whole black mouth on the head, between the eyes, but below with 2-3 rows. I used transparent thread to sew it, it looks better.

For the tears, I used blue yarn and just sewed a couple of straight lines. See picture for a better understanding:

Now sew the head and the body together.

And then fix the arms with pins, then sew them together.

And… you’re all done.

I found out about MOO about a year ago and I really wanted to have some nice business cards that are more like me: fun and silly. I wasn’t impressed with what I ordered from a Romanian site and I was looking for something that stands out from the crowd. So Hugh MacLeod’s cartoons are perfect for my etsy shop business cards.

I read two of Hugh’s books, `Evil Plans` and `Blogging in your underwear`, and when I noticed his cartoons on MOO, I was really excited at the idea of having his drawings on my cards. If you’ve read the books, you know why

I got the cards yesterday, I am impressed with the fact that the guys – or Little Robots – from Moo thought of every little detail, from the sturdy black boxes containing the the business cards to the funny messages on their site and e-mails. Kudos!

So thanks guys, I am really impressed with your work! I highly recommend

I worked a lot for these two patterns and am still working on several other patterns. I love writing and creating new projects, especially when I am having fun making them.

În ultima perioadă multe persoane m-au întrebat când mai țin cursuri de croșetat în Oradea, când mai organizăm o „șezătoare urbană” etc.

Mno, împreună cu Narcisa, am pus la cale câteva întâlniri unde ne-om juca de-a împletitul firelor cu croșeta. Fiind cursuri pentru începători, vom începe cu tehnicile de croșetat, cunoașterea și diferențierea firelor, alegerea croșetelor potrivite, despre gauge și poate-om face câteva flori simple. Asta ca să ne intrăm într-un ritm.

Apoi, dacă vă țineți de treabă, vom trece la croșetarea de căciuli – vine toamna, bine-mi pare – și apoi vom învăța câteva modele care vă vor fi foarte utile în proiectele viitoare.

Așadar, dacă vreți să ne jucăm cu firele de ață și croșetele vă așteptăm joi, în 17 septembrie, de la ora 17, pe str. Ady Endre nr. 17 la 1 oră de croșetat.

Vom asigura fire de croșetat și croșete, și primim donații de 15 lei pentru fiecare curs.

RO: Știi cum e când reușești să termini toate proiectele la timp și, în timp ce cauți noi proiecte, te plictisești pentru că nu te poți hotărî ce să lucrezi? Da, nici eu! Iar de când ambrozia s-a dezlănțuit, alergia și-a intrat în ritm. Și uite așa croșetez cu viteza unui melc trist.

Am profitat de o comandă și-am fotografiat toți pașii pe care i-am urmat în a croșeta o căciulă minion. Mărimea pe care-am făcut-o e pentru un bebeluș de 3-6 luni, dar puteți adapta ușor modelul meu lucrând mai multe rânduri de creșteri.

And right now its allergy season in Romania, ambrosia is killing me slowly. I’ve been working so slow even a snail could cross the road faster than me finishing a row of DC.

I had to make a minion hat for a sweet baby girl so I took the time to take some photos and write a free tutorial for all of you who are still searching for a nice minion hat crochet pattern. The size is for a 3-6 months old baby, but you can easily adjust it for bigger sizes just by making more increasing rows. The hat is worked by joining rows, but the eyes are worked in the round.

RO: De când am cumpărat patternul pentru păturica cu bufnițe, mă tot strădui să … fac și o geantă. Că tare mult îmi place cum ies hexagoanele din firul Catania. Un motiv în plus pentru a cumpăra modele: le poți adapta și transforma în funcție de ce idei îți vin.

Geanta aceasta am croșetat-o astă vară, în orele petrecute în trenurile românești. Nici nu vă puteți imagina cât pot croșeta pe un drum de 200 km într-un tren care se mișcă aproape la fel de repede ca o țestoasă dopată cu RedBull.

De prin iunie stătea-n cutia cu proiecte-n lucru, iar zilele trecute, încercând să-mi spăl ochii de zecile de minioni lucrați, am terminat-o. I-am adăugat mânere din piele și căptușeală din bumbac (cu un buzunar pentru telefon) înăuntru.

Zău că-mi place tare mult cum a ieșit și parcă n-aș mai da-o. Dar mie-mi pot face oricând alta, așa că ar fi păcat să nu ajut pe cineva să ofere un cadou diferit și unicat.

Așa că o ofer spre vânzare, pe Etsy.

EN: Ever since I bought TheHatandI’s pattern for Owl Obsession I thought about making a colorful bag. Because I really like how the hexagons look when made with Catania yarn. See, this is another good reason why one should buy patterns: you learn stuff and you can adapt them for your pleasure.

I crocheted this cotton bag during this past summer, while I was travelling to my folks. You have no idea how much work you can finish while you are travelling on a train that moves almost as fast as a tortoise high on RedBull. I am not kidding, the trains in Romania are so slow I had to make 200 km in almost 5 hours!

Anyhow, after I made the hexagons and joined them, I put the bag in my “WIP box” (I know you have one too, do not judge me! :D) and only this past week I finished it. Lately I’ve been making so many minions that I had to work on a project that did not involve those yellowish creatures.

I added leather handles and lined the purse with a cotton fabric – even made an inside pocket, perfect for a smartphone. It fits my tablet, my smartphone, a wallet, a mascara, a book and, of course, a pair of keys.

Seriously, I fell in love with it after I finished it. It is so colorful and joyful and always makes me smile. At first I thought about keeping it for myself, but I can make another one for myself anytime.

So this purse is on sale on Etsy because I want to help you make a great gift for a happy and joyful someone.

RO: Dacă n-ar exista ambrozie, viața mea ar fi atât de simplă. Și mult mai productivă. În ultimele 2 luni m-am luptat din greu cu alergia la ambrozie, dar măcar am compensat cu multe proiecte frumoase (în sfârșit am terminat și șalul din Alize Sal). Mi-a plăcut să mă joc cu fire noi și să îmbin tehnici interesante.

Partea și mai frumoasă e că am ajuns să încerc, în sfârșit, croșetatul tunisian. Și m-am îndrăgostit de tehnica asta. Am început deja 2 eșarfe cu fir degrade în tehnica tunisiană – o eșarfă din bumbac (Alize Cotton Gold) și una din minunatul fir Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable. E moale, fin și uimitor de plăcut la atingere firul acesta, mai ales că e … acril.

De îndată ce ambrozia dispare, sper să pot publica până-n final de octombrie cele 3 patterns de croșetat pe care le-am început de ceva vreme, inclusiv cel pentru rochița minion. Dar despre asta voi mai reveni.

EN: Too much ambrosia and a lot of work, that was my schedule for the last 2 months. The ambrosia part is awful – (damn allergies!), but the work part was amazing. Because I got to play with different new yarns and mix up different crochet techniques. And I finally finished the shawl I made using Alize Sal yarn.

And, finally, I took the time to try Tunisian crochet. And I fell in love with it! I have 2 scarves on my Tunisian hooks, one with cotton blend yarn – Alize Cotton Gold – and one with the amazing Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn. I love how soft and nice it is that yarn, especially because it is acrylic.

As soon as my ambrosia allergy will go away, hopefully will get to publish in my Etsy shop 3 new crochet patterns . I started working on those for quite some time, including the minion baby dress pattern, but it is really hard to work when you are struggling to breathe …

RO: Vara-i frumoasă pentru căldură și soare, dar toamna e cel mai spectaculos sezon al anului. Numai toamna poți găsi atât de multe combinații de culori în orice parte ai privi.

Tocmai în așteptarea toamnei mi-am croșetat o bluză scurtă, pe care o pot purta cu topuri prea decoltate pentru stilul meu.

Am lucrat bluza aceasta din 2 fire diferite, atât ca textură, cât și ca grosime. Partea de torso e lucrată cu fir Lana Grosa în degrade. Deși e recomandat ca fir pentru șosete, îmi place cum se așază și că ține cald. Tocmai de aceea am improvizat un stil mai … „găuros” :)) Iar mânecile sunt lucrate cu Alize Real 40, un fir pe care l-am găsit într-o mercerie din Timișoara, dar nu-l găsesc și-n Oradea. E plăcut, moale, se așază bine, se lucrează foarte bine pentru un fir ce conține lână și acril. Am spălat bluza manual, să văd cum se comportă. Lana Grossa mai lasă din culoare și se întinde puțin, dar revine la forma inițială după uscare. Iar Alize lasă scame în apă, dar nu s-a lărgit ori lungit și nici nu se decolorează în apă.

Dacă ar fi să dau note acestor fire, cred că aș nota cu 4 stele din 5 Lana Grossa (pentru că se decolorează la spălat) și 5 stele Alize Real 40.

EN: I love summer, but I love autumn even more. Because only in this rainy season you can see so many awesome and wonderful color combinations every where you would look.

For this autumn I made myself this short crochet blouse – I actually started working on it in July, but I just finished it last week. It was not that much of work, I always had custom orders to finish. It’s a blouse I wear with tops which are too revealing for my style.

I used 2 different yarns with different textures, just to see how these would mix. And I love the result. For the torso I used Lana Grossa, which is recommended as a sock yarn, but I love how warm it is so I thought it would be good for a second layer blouse. I used a model with holes because this yarn is quite warm.

The sleeves are worked with Alize Real 40, which is wool and acrylic, a wonderful yarn, I found in a town nearby, but sadly not in Oradea, where I live.

After the blouse was finished, I hand washed it to see how the yarn is acting. Lana Grossa is stretching a little, but came back to the same size once it was dry. The sad part is that is coloring the water, so I do not like that in particular, but Alize was wonderful. It shed a little, but it did not color the water.

If I were to rate these yarns, I would say Lana Grossa is 4 stars out of 5 and Alize Real 40 is 5 stars out of 5.

RO: Ieeei, am 2 modele noi pe etsy. Entuziasmul se datorează și faptului că lucrez la aceste modele de câteva luni, însă la final de august, când m-a lovit din plin ambrozia, n-am mai putut lucra la ele. Știu că sunt doamne care abia așteaptă modelul de rochie

Primul e pentru o căciulă din fir Unforgettable Red Heart, model pe care l-am numit „Never forget” pentru că e genul de căciulă pe care n-ai cum s-o uiți. Colorată, veselă și călduroasă.

Al doilea model e pentru o rochie croșetata pentru fetițe „Happy Baby” – 4 mărimi, de la bebeluș la până pentru fetițe de maximum 5 ani. Să mai spun că am acasă 3 rochițe în 3 mărimi și 3 modele diferite? Sunt sigură că-și vor găsi stăpânele până la final de an.

EN: Hoooooray! And as of today I have 2 new patterns in my etsy store. I am so excited about this because I thought I will never finish them. I have been working on these for many months, but when ambrosia allergy broke out, I stopped working on them. It is so hard to crochet and focus on what you are doing when you can barely breathe. Or see, for that matter, because ambrosia allergy also made my eyes teary all the time.

But I managed to finish these two lovely patterns, of course I have a few more on my hooks, but all will be revealed at the right time.

The first pattern is for a beanie I really love, the „Never Forget” beanie. Made with Unforgettable yarn from Red Heart – I just love this yarn, cannot believe how soft it is although it is just acrylic.

The second pattern – and I know several ladies who will be excited to get this pattern – is for the crochet baby dress pattern called „Happy baby”. One pattern, 3 different looks: minion, minnie and rainbow. The pattern has lots of pictures explaining every step, including the minion and minnie motifs.

RO: Anul acesta a trecut atât de repede, încât îmi vine greu de crezut că deja suntem în decembrie, la 2 săptămâni distanță de Crăciun. Am muncit mult, tare mult în aceste 12 luni, și-am avut proiecte din cele mai diverse. Unele mai amuzante decât altele, din materiale bune pe care le-am lucrat cu mult spor.

Când trag o linie imaginară și fac un sumar al anului, realizez că am învățat enorm de multe. Tehnici noi pe care le-am adoptat și pe care le ador (tunisiana), am încercat fire interesante (păcat că nu le găsesc în merceriile locale) și-am observat, încă o dată, că oamenii chiar apreciază munca bine făcută.

Singurul meu regret e că nici în 2015 n-am reușit să învăț să tricotez. Dar zilele n-au intrat în sac, aș putea foarte bine să-mi setez ca obiectiv pentru 2016 să învăț să tricotez.

Dar ceea ce vreau să accentuez e că anul acesta am avut mulți clienți răbdători, care-au învățat că un produs făcut 100% manual nu se realizează peste noapte sau în 2 ore, la o cafea. Iar un pattern, un tutorial de croșetat, presupune enorm de multă răbdare ce se întinde de la creionarea modelului, realizarea unei mărimi, adaptarea pentru alte mărimi, testare, re-restare și, când crezi că totul e gata, fotografierea pașilor, scrierea tutorialului și încă o dată verificarea pașilor.

E o muncă imensă în crearea unui pattern și-s recunoscătoare tuturor clienților care au cumpărat tutorialele în care am investit zeci de ore de muncă și mii de metri de fire.

Iată și câteva modele realizate în ultimele 3 luni:

EN: I cannot believe how fast time flies. It’s almost the end of yet another cool and fun year in my little workshop. When I think about 2015 I remember new yarns I tried and love, learned new techniques (I love Tunisian crochet!) new fun projects and very cool customers. My only regret is that I did not learn how to knit this year.

But there is always next year and I might as well make knitting one of my resolutions for 2016. Who knows, I might end up learning how to knit after all

What I love most about 2015 is that during the last 12 months I noticed how people appreciate more and more quality items, 100% handmade. There were many people who told me nobody buys crochet items, that this old technique is overrated. But with each custom request, with each cool project I learned that people want to be special, to be unique, to have and to wear one of a kind items. And that takes time and patience. People seem to know you cannot crochet a baby blanket in 2 hours, over a cup of coffee.

And I am very grateful for each and every one of you who bought my patterns on Etsy. It might seem like something easy to make, but the truth is that the amount of work involved in creating a pattern is huuuuuge! For me it’s about making a sketch of the item – yup, I draw my models in a notebook, thankfully I crochet better than I draw – then get the shape right, then the size. When I am done with one size, I start working on 2 or 3 more sizes. Testing, working on each and every size, testing again. And when I have everything figured out, I start photographing each step. This is also another way of testing the pattern. It really takes a lot of work to make a pattern.

So I am grateful to all of you who acknowledged my work by buying my patterns. Thank you for that, it makes me want to continue with my work.

RO: Dacă tricotatul a rămas în stand by din motive de timp și … ahm, nervi, iar c2c (corner 2 corner) nu m-a prins foarte tare, am adoptat tunisian crochet. Sau stilul tunisian de croșetat. Care include inclusiv o metodă ce imită tricotatul. În decembrie am început un proiect cu fir Alize angora gold, am început cu 55 de ochiuri de lanț și am utilizat metoda care imită tricotatul. Când ghemul de ață s-a terminat, mi-am dat seama că aș putea să îndoi eșarfa lată și să o cos pentru a avea grosime (angora gold nu e un fir gros, dar datorită combinației de lână, mohair și acril, e foarte călduros). Și în timp ce coseam, mi-am dat seama că dacă o cos în ambele extremități dar nu și-n mijloc, poate ieși un bolero drăguț. Am adăugat o margine și-am îngustat mânecile, ca să obțin efectul de bufant et voila!

Și uite așa mi-a ieșit acest bolero, care ține de cald și se așază foarte frumos pe trup.

Îmi place atât de mult tehnica tunisiană că am început mai multe eșarfe, dar cât de curând voi îndrăzni să fac și-o vestă în această tehnică. De Crăciun mi-am făcut cadou cartea Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Tunisian Crochet și-am descoperit că multe lucruri pe care le făceam pentru că mi se părea că așa ar trebui să fie, sunt corecte. Iar modelele din carte sunt foarte bine explicate, cu zeci de imagini. Recomand cartea oricărei persoane care vrea să învețe mai multe despre această tehnică

Abia aștept să-mi ajungă coletul cu croșete cu fir, ca să pot lucra proiecte mai late – precum un poncho sau o bluză mai mare.

Voi ce tehnici noi învățați/exersați?

EN: For now, knitting is just somewhere on my „To learn when I am not pissed off” list and I am not too much fond of C2C either. But I love, love, love Tunisian crochet. It looks so smooth, so professional, so easy but complicated at the same time.

In December I started a new project with Tunisian and Alize Angora Gold yarn, a pretty thin but warm yarn. I started with 55 chains and went with the knit like method until I ran out of that ball of yarn – 100 gr, about 450 meters. I ended with a long rectangle and as I looked at it, I thought it would make for a thicker scarf if I were to fold it and sew the edges. And so as I began sewing, I realized that if I sew it just on the edges, but not in the middle, I might get a bolero. So after sewing, making a border and sleeves, I came up with this lovely bolero.

And I love it! I have several scarves on my Tunisian hooks and because I bought Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Tunisian Crochet for Christmas, I might try to make a vest. For myself, because I am quite small and I would finish it rather quick. I am fond of this book, it is very well written and every step is explained with lots of photos. Even for someone who learned English as a foreign language at school, I do understand everything explained about Tunisian in this book written by Kim Guzman.

I can hardly wait to get my longer Tunisian hooks to start bigger projects.

I taught myself how to crochet, but knitting was a bit of a stress for me as it seemed a to be more trickier. And every time I tried to learn it by myself, I ended up frustrated because I could not understand the movements. YouTube tutorials were of no help for me, perhaps because I adapted the crocheted movements in the knitting style.

A quiet evening, a small set of bamboo knitting needles and a good teacher – Narcisa. That is all it took for me to learn how to knit. And the new technique got me hooked (ha!) so much that I had to start and complete a project. And this is how I ended up making this very lovely and very easy to knit scarf. So this is Knitting 1.0 for me.

The edge is crocheted, because I really like that kind of edge – I learned it from a book a few years ago – a good reason to invest in books and tutorials.

This is a crochet flower I made half a year ago, for a lovely head band.  The big petals and huge button make the flower pop, you cannot miss it, and the colors are fresh, girly, perfect for a baby girl head band.

Eight petals, 4 different colors, cotton yarn and about half an hour  of work. Just for one flower. But it was all worth it.

I like to crochet flowers. Every time my inspiration is lost between coffees, I use that time to make a pretty flower. Or to sleep, depends on how tired my eyes are.

RO: Iarna-i lungă și geroasă, / iară mie nici că-mi pasă!

Sau ceva de genul. Croșetez mai bine decât rimez Pentru a fi-n ton cu săptămânile modei ce au loc în perioada aceasta în marile orașe europene, iată și o mică (foarte mică!) parte din colecția de iarnă-primăvară de căciuli croșetate a la Atelier Handmade. Aș mai fi pozat și alte modele, dar s-a topit zăpada, iar de la o vreme, nici pleata nu mai vrea să șadă frumos pentru poze.

Pom-Pom-ul e la mare căutare, cu cât mai mare, mai colorat și vesel, cu atât mai bine. Colecția continuă cu 2 eșarfe drăguțe și, dacă totul merge strună, cu un poncho elegant tricotat. Dar despre poncho vom povesti cu altă ocazie.

EN: Fashion week is all over Europe by now, every designer proudly presenting the new spring collection. Well, I am a bit late – I do live in Ardeal, which is where people live a slow rhythm life in this part of Romania – and I present you my very first winter crochet hats for 2016. There will be others, of course, as soon as I’ll get rid of my bad hair days.

The pom-pom is greatly appreciated, the bigger, the colorful, the better. Two lovely scarfs and, if all ends well, one lovely elegant poncho will make my collection of winter items bigger.

RO: Am început anul într-un pas ceva mai relaxat, un ritm după care tânjeam ca un prunc după jucăria preferată. Ca o pisică după iarbă sau ca un melc după căpșuni. Pare exagerat, dar ritmul prea alert din ultimii 2 ani s-a transformat în monotonie, iar frica de plafonare m-a ambiționat să schimb ceva. Mi-era dor să schițez noi modele de haine sau de jucării, mi-era dor să combin culori, să inventez personaje și să fac și altceva în afară de minioni și cavaleri.

Îmi place să fac minioni – ador să fac rochițe minion, dar îmi place la fel de mult să inventez alte proiecte. Iar de când am învățat să tricotez, parcă și imaginația mea a trecut printr-un restart și dă un randament mai bun.

În decembrie mi-am propus ca odată cu noul an să fac niște modificări în programul meu zilnic. M-am aprovizionat cu multe fire noi, am primit multe andrele –  le prefer pe cele de bambus – și noi agende, în care deja am notat 4 modele diferite (click pe poză dacă vrei și tu o agendă personalizată). Am în lucru vreo 8 proiecte diferite, unul mai interesant decât celălalt.

Da, pentru mine funcționează. Handmade nu înseamnă produse scoase pe bandă, identice și fără pic de personalizare, dimpotrivă. Lucrurile create și lucrate manual sunt unice și au nevoie de timp și de răbdare pentru a fi finalizate. Cu cât mai mulți vor înțelege acest aspect, cu atât mai mult va crește această nișă.

EN: This year I started on a slower pace, I craved for something new like a child craves candy. Or like a cat loves to sleep on soft pillows. The last two years have been hectic, lots of work, lots of projects and very little time to make new projects. And I missed that. I really love to sketch doodles or new ideas in my notebook – although, I am terrible at drawing, but in my mind all these projects are awesome.

I really wanted to make something other than just minions and knight hats. I love to crochet minions, but I also love to create new handmade stuff. So in December I decided this year I will change things a bit. I bought new notebooks and I already wrote down 4 new patterns. I still have to take pictures and write the pattern on my laptop, but I feel much better knowing that I created something new and cool. While making new patterns, I also learned new skills, new techniques. Which is really cool

Ever since I learned how to knit, I kind of rebooted my creativity. I am already on my second knitted top and I find it fascinating how easy it is to knit.

For me, this slowing down thing, it works. Handmade is not about how many hats or scarves you finish, its not about making cheap stuff. In fact, handmade is about creating and working unique items, which takes time, patience and lots of cool yarn.

I am curious if any of you readers ever felt like you should take a bit of time off to just focus on improving your creativity or learning something new.

RO: Săptămâna trecută, pregătind câte ceva pentru Artist Love Fair, târgul la care-am participat în Oradea, am croșetat și-un mic buchet de flori. Inițial voiam să fac un ghiveci cu o floare crosetata, dar m-a prins atât de tare cartea Dark Places de Gillian Flynn, pe care o ascultam, încât am croșetat și cusut vreo 3 trandafiri. Până mi-am adus aminte de ghiveci, am obținut buchetul din poză.

Și-mi place rezultatul. Uneori cele mai simpatice proiecte ies și din greșală.

Că tot am adus vorba de cărți audio, ador să ascult cărți în timp ce lucrez. Mai ales când am de făcut proiecte pe care le-am lucrat de zeci de ori. Cărțile audio rup monotonia și transformă întreaga atmosferă într-una antrenantă sau misterioasă, în funcție de carte, desigur.

Luna asta ne pregătim de mărțișor, nu-i așa? Anul trecut am făcut zeci de flori în nuanțe de roz și mov, anul acesta am diversificat și-am făcut mărțișoare din multe culori, dar și din fire interesante, de la lână la mohair ori bumbac mercerizat.

EN: Last week, as I was crocheting cute stuff for a handmade fair I went to, I made this little bouquet or roses. It started out as a pot with a big flower, but as I was listening to Dark Places written by Gillian Flynn, I forgot all about my pot flower and made several crochet roses. And before I realized what I was doing, I had already made the pretty bouquet. Oh well, it happens. Sometimes the cutest projects happen by mistake.

Speaking of audiobooks, I love to listen to books when I am working. Especially when I have to make same slippers for the thousand time. Audiobooks set the mood when I am working and I get away from the same routine.

On March 1st and March 8th we are celebrating Womens Day and Mothers Day in Romania, so I made a bunch of crochet flowers using all sorts of colors and yarn textures. I really love to play with shapes and textures of different types of yarn. And flowers are always a good way of using those scraps of yarn you have all laying around the house.

RO: Am învățat să tricotez acum o lună, sub îndrumarea vecinei Narcisa (apropos, de căutați andrele, nasturi sau croșete, la ea găsiți!). De atunci am reușit să fac o bluză, o vestă, un top și … prima pereche de șosete tricotate! Tulai, că tare ușor o fost!

Nu știu de ce aveam impresia că e complicat nevoie mare să tricotezi șosete. Poate pentru că-n copilărie se chinuia buna să mă învețe să tricotez? Cam greu să înveți să lucreze cu andrele un prunc activ, ce toată ziua s-ar zbengui pe coclauri.

Dintr-un click în altul, am ajuns la Christine Perry sau Winwick Mum. Și-am început să citesc articolele despre Sockalong, imaginile m-au convins că e ușor și dintr-una în alta, m-am apucat de treabă. Am tricotat cu o pereche de andrele circulare din bambus, de 3,75 și-am folosit un fir mega colorat (întrebați-o pe Narcisa). Sigur că nu mi-au ieșit egale șosetele, prima a fost un fel de test să văd dacă înțeleg procedura, a doua șosetă a fost lucrată fără cusur. Chiar și așa, mândră mi-s de șosetele mele și-s perfecte pentru când stau în bean bag și croșetez vulpi snoabe.

Din păcate, cartea lui Christine nu mi-e disponibilă din România, pentru că Amazon, dar o voi cumpăra din altă parte. Îmi place să cumpăr cărți și tutoriale, pentru că, spre deosebire de cele gratuite, cele plătite sunt mult mai bogate în informații despre croi, despre cum se lucrează forme & modele. Și-n plus, cumpărând cărțile și tutorialele, sprijin creatorul și-l încurajez să facă altele, la fel de reușite.

Dacă te-am convins să încerci să tricotezi șosete, dă-mi de știre!

EN: I learned how to knit about a month ago, with the help from my friend Narcisa. Since then I started knitting just to practice my skills and made a bunch of projects: a cool top, a vest, a few tiny hats and … my first pair of knitted socks! And, boy!, I realized it is very easy to knit socks!

I always thought it’s hard to knit a pair of socks, I always watched my grandmother knitting socks for us when we were kids and always thought it is so hard knowing what to do with each needle. She used to knit with 5 huge metallic needles. She tried to teach me how to knit, but I was just a little girl, full of energy, all I wanted to do at that age was go out and play with the other kids.

One day I stumbled across Christine Perry or The Winwick Mum and read all the articles about the Sockalong. And that is all I needed to give the knitting socks a try. I used 3,75 circular bamboo needles (the smallest I had at home) and made a first sock. The first is far from perfection, a bit wide and here and there I increased or decreased the stitches because I thought I missed one. But the second sock was perfect, not a single stitch out of order. And I am very proud of myself cause I managed to knit a pair of (uneven) socks for myself. Not perfect to give away, but perfect to wear when I am crocheting foxes in my comfy bean bag. For the next pair I must wait for my Addi needles to arrive!

Sadly, I cannot buy Christine’s book from Amazon, because Amazon.co.uk does not ship to Romania or at least that was the message I got three times. But I will buy the book somehow, through some friends in the UK. I love to invest in books and patterns that are well written, I always learn something new and I also think it is a way of supporting the designers creativity.

Hopefully this article will encourage some of you to try to knit socks. Its easier than it looks

p.s: sorry for the bad lit photos, I found that I am much like my cat, high on energy during early hours or late hours. Weird!
